Sheger Park / Friendship Park
Sheger Park also known as Friendship Park is one of Addis Ababa's most celebrated modern achievements — a transformative urban park developed along the Kebena and Little Akaki river corridors under the urban renewal vision of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Spanning several kilometres along riverbanks that were once neglected and polluted, Sheger Park has become the city's premier public green space and a symbol of Addis Ababa's urban renaissance.
The Park Landscape
The park's designers drew inspiration from renowned international parks while maintaining an distinctly Ethiopian aesthetic. Wide pedestrian promenades are lined with native trees, ornamental plants, and colourful flower beds. At night, thousands of lights transform the park into a magical environment that draws families, couples, and friends for evening strolls.
Key Features
River Walkways
The park follows the restored banks of the Kebena River, with beautifully engineered walking paths, foot bridges, and viewing platforms that bring visitors up close to the river's natural flow — a remarkable change from the heavily polluted waterway the river once was.
Fountains and Water Features
Multiple fountain installations create focal points along the route, with musical fountains that perform choreographed water displays to Ethiopian music. These are particularly popular in the evening when illuminated for effect.
Cultural and Art Installations
The park incorporates public art, sculptures, and installations celebrating Ethiopian culture, heritage, and the diversity of the country's peoples. Information boards along the route provide context for visitors.
Cycling and Jogging Paths
Dedicated lanes for cyclists and joggers run the length of the park, providing a safe and scenic option for exercise that is especially popular with Addis Ababa's fitness-conscious residents.
Cafes and Refreshment Stops
Multiple cafes, juice bars, and food vendors are located throughout the park, offering refreshments ranging from traditional Ethiopian coffee and tej to smoothies and light meals.
