Unity Park

About

If you want to have a glimpse of Ethiopia's royal history, its diverse cultural mosaic and stunning wildlife all in one place, you should take a tour of Unity Park. Nestled inside Ethiopia's 19th-century Grand Palace, Unity Park features various historical attractions blending beautifully with Ethiopia's cultural and natural wonders.

Initiated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Unity Park offers a plethora of attractions including a zoo where black-maned Ethiopian lions stroll gracefully, a botanical garden bursting with indigenous plants, and cultural pavilions showcasing Ethiopia's nine regional states and two chartered cities.

What to Experience

The Grand Palace

At the heart of Unity Park stands the historic Grand Palace — a complex of buildings that has served as the seat of Ethiopian government since the reign of Emperor Menelik II. Walk through meticulously restored halls, throne rooms, and ceremonial spaces that tell the story of modern Ethiopian statehood.

Zoo and Wildlife Sanctuary

One of the most beloved features of Unity Park is its zoo, home to the iconic black-maned Ethiopian lion — a subspecies unique to Ethiopia. The zoo also houses spotted hyenas, leopards, colobus monkeys, peacocks, and a variety of bird species native to the country.

Cultural Pavilions

Nine pavilions, each representing one of Ethiopia's regional states and two chartered cities, celebrate the incredible diversity of Ethiopian peoples. Visitors can admire traditional architecture, handicrafts, food, and cultural artefacts from regions as diverse as the Afar desert, the SNNPR highlands, and the Somali lowlands.

Botanical Garden

A serene botanical garden features hundreds of indigenous Ethiopian plant species, including ancient fig trees, medicinal herbs, flowering shrubs, and giant bamboo groves — a green oasis within the capital.

Aquarium and Aviary

An impressive freshwater aquarium displays the fish species of Ethiopia's great Rift Valley lakes, while a walk-through aviary houses colourful birds from across the continent.

Visitor Tips

  • Book tickets in advance during weekends and public holidays.
  • Allow at least three to four hours for a complete visit.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes.
